Eugene and I just got back from watching "DEPARTURES"... a Japanese movie that recently won BEST FOREIGN FILM at the Oscars. This is a movie that touches upon a very taboo topic of death and the profession of a encoffineer - a professional who cleans, grooms and dresses the dead in preparation for "the life after". It is slightly different from an enbalmer as the former usually performs the 'ceremony' in front of the family members.
It was indeed a great insight to a little known profession.. or rather, a profession that many would frown upon and the movie really made me have respect for people who dare step into this industry.
It's not your usual blockbuster booms and bangs kind of movie.. more like something you would watch at a foreign film festival and that is what I love about it. The pace of the movie was just great... with some lighthearted moments and some really sad ones.
Go watch it if you have the time... after all, they won BEST FOREIGN FILM so it can't be that bad ya?
Good movie!
Watch the trailer here:
Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki) is a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has just been dissolved and now finds himself without a job. Daigo decides to move back to his old hometown with his wife to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad entitled "Departures" thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency only to discover that the job is actually for a "Nokanshi" or "encoffineer," a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. While his wife and others despise the job, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work and begins to perfect the art of "Nokanshi," acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and the family of the departed. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living.
wow it's been a week since i last posted.... bad blogger~! LOL! I've been busy.... with various things including trying to finish the korean drama (Cruel Love) and Forensic Heroes II coz my mom needs to return them to the video library. Watching these dramas kinda zaps my inspiration and energy away from scrapping coz I've not being doing any scrapping (aside from a little secret project I will talk about more later) at all.
I've also managed to catch WALL-E and DARK KNIGHT (finally) too.... love the 2 shows. I had mixed reviews from friends about WALL-E.. some really hated it (thought it was boring) and some loved it. I LOVED IT. I think the show and animation was simply brilliant and how it can capture my attention without any much dialog (esp during the first half of the show). Amazing. Here's a shot of me with Wall-E. hehehe
So... about my secret project. It's actually for a new workshop next month. Totally different from what I've been doing. It's not going to be a layout class but a technique based one. You'll be altering something that will end up looking like you dug it out of the Titanic (according to kelly) LOL!!! Sounds interesting? I've been doing lots of experimenting, researching etc for this workshop and it should be loads of fun.
E asked me last night how I feel after being electricuted.. whether I have been feeling any different. HAHA.... I guess this is what happened! It's so bizzare and departed from my usual colourful workshops you wouldn't have guessed that I did it.
I'm not nearly done yet... still needs some refining and adding on the finishing touches but it'll be a whole load of fun i promise!
On a sad note though.. I read from Elsie's blog that she resigned from KI MEMORIES. boohooooo.. no more Love Elsie products... which also means, no more Beautiful Mess workshops. I'm saddened by this news coz I really enjoyed designing layouts for her products. Guess it's time to move on....
for those of you who have the complete series from 1 all the way to 5 and the 2 Special Editions (making it 7 series in total)... good for u!!!! You can put them all in an album now! :)
Oh and guess who made it home to add on to my ever growing beanie collection last nite?
Aren't they the cutest thing??? hehehhehheeeee..... thanks dear!!!! and one more thing I found while shopping at Cold Storage about a week back:
WEEEEEEE!!! M&M Dark Chocolate is finally here!! Tried them in LA back in Jan. Was sad that they did not carry them here in SG but they r now here... HAPPYYYYY!!!!
Okay I guess I'll stop here for today. ...... got to go get ready for work now.... talk soon!!!
Thank You Dear...... for this:
my own IPOD TOUCH! muaks muaks muaks.... me love it loads. *smiles*
Last night Eugene and I went for the Gala Premiere of "The Mummy - Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" at GV Grand. I remember watching the previous 2 Mummy movies but they did not really leave an impression on me. This 3rd installment was pretty okay... not the most exciting of movies but watchable. It got a little corny at times too.
AND....
I feel a little of the sickies coming... my throat hurts.... and i was coughing all night.. UGGGH.. wats happening!
Just back from watching "The Incredible Hulk" at Vivocity. Not too bad.. i quite enjoyed the movie. I preferred Iron Man over this but it's still something that is really worth watching... especially if you have watched all the different Marvel character movies.
and since i was at vivocity - i satisfied my craving for Blueberry Blast from the Boost Juice Bar. hehee.
on the way back, I wanted to stop by Candy Empire to look at some chocolates but Eugene did not want to go into the store. But when I said "don't you want to go look at chips? Thought you love chips?" ... His eyes lit up like a small kid.. haha. Anyways we did not go in afterall. We were about 20 steps away from the store and I walked away.
I then asked "So what is your favourite type of chips?" to which he answered "the sour kind .. like the ones I ate in UK long time back".
Errr... sour kind? I told him to give me specifics like which sour kind? vinegar and salt? sour cream? which brand? lays? ruffles? Marks n Spencer brand????? (of coz by now you would imagine that my brain had a brilliant idea for a scrapbook page) but well....... specifics i did not get.
That's my husband for you.... he eats anything. LOL. so no favourites.
shucks... there goes another great layout plan. Perhaps I should just scrap about his non fussiness for food? LOL.
TOYCON this weekend? Apparently I'm supposed to be excited! wooooot! Eugene and I went for the ToyCon in Hong Kong several years back and it was pretty fun. We queued up for limited edition Bearbricks and exchanged them with fellow bearbrick fans at the show.
This is the limited edition Singapore Bearbrick to be given out at the show!!!
Since I'm working later in the afternoon on Sat... we will probably go look see look see at the convention before that. I'm eyeing this tofu blank...... i love TOFU MAN!
over and out!

Alright... so I'm back from watching 'You Don't Mess with the Zohan'. I quite liked the movie. Lots of laughs, political jabs, sexual connotations and wats not. Adam Sandler's performance was stellar as was Rob Scheinder (is that how to spell his name?). The only thing I didnt quite enjoy about the film was that it went a little slapstick.. just a tad bit over. Maybe I was not really in the mood for slapstick. But go watch it.. you'll enjoy yourself. Fun movie.
Oh and Mariah Carey had a cameo appearance too. haha.
and guess what? I managed to scrap tonight too! woohoooo. I finally was able to break into my Sassafrass Lass and Pink Paislee stuff which was on my scrap table begging for me to scrap them the entire week. Will take a pic tomorrow during the day. It's really nice to scrap my own stuff... don't get me wrong... i LOVE designing workshops. I love the challenge of thinking and sketching the designs then translating my thoughts into the actual layouts. It's a real challenge but the finishing line is always a satisfying one.
But tonight... I'm a happy camper... scrapping ME things. :)
My parents and aunties/uncles are now at Genting . They went for the last of the OSMONDS concert tonight. I wanted to join them up in Genting this weekend initially but the car wouldnt fit another passenger.. LOL! There is only that many my dad's MPV could take. Anyhoo... dad MMSed me just about an hour or so ago a photo... the whole gang of them took a photo with Donny Osmond! wow!!! they must be star strucked. ahhhh.. the cool genting air would have been a great change to this unforgiving weather. Its way toooo hot here.
Checking out for now.. gonna watch some TV with Eugene now. NITE!
